Vision boards, gah. Here’s what I know about vision boards. The person who claims that the “pictures” on their vision board have come true, will tell you “yes”. Those whose hasn’t had theirs come true, will tell you “no”. The clear answer (for me) is yes. But no one tells you the details of how these pictures actually do come true.
The Movie That Started It All
The hype of vision boards started with the movie “The Secret” which was released in 2006. Before I go any further, this is not a bashing of the movie. These are my thoughts and experiences. The movie based its theory on the law of attraction. In other words, like attracts like, or, whatever you focus your attention on, you receive.
I remember watching the movie circa 2007. The movie had a big impact on me. I was looking for change in a few areas of my life. Also, I was about to be out of a job and potentially, the country among other issues. So, I started focusing my attention on things I wanted, instead of things I didn’t. I started carrying those Universal Bank blank checks which I printed from the movie’s webpage. I added my name to the “Pay” field, hoping I receive the amount I penned in the $ field, with all my focused attention. However, after all that, I forgot about it for a few weeks. One random day I realized I was not focusing my attention on what I wanted including that check. I sort of needed a reminder every day to focus on it. Cue vision board.
My First Vision Board
I promise I’m getting to the point. At the time vision boards were not all the rage, and if anyone heard you talking about them they thought you were crazy. So, I went ahead and made mine anyways. I pulled out a brown board and printed out some words, pictures, and anything else I wanted pinned on my first vision board. Also, I added a note that would change the course of my immigration status in this country. I added something about getting my masters degree on there too.
My vision board was completely filled so there was no more cork-board to see. I placed the board on a wall opposite my bed so that every day that I woke up, I would have to see it. Every morning I woke up and the first thing I saw was the vision board. Excitedly, I felt like I did enough and now I was going to get everything I “asked” for since I was focused on it for a few minutes every day.

It Came True
I’m going to pick on the two major items I mentioned above. My Masters, and my immigration status. In the weeks ahead, I did absolutely nothing to find out about what I needed for my Masters. I didn’t put any effort towards making that a reality for me. I thought it would come to me on a silver platter because I had it on my board. On the other hand, I took two routes to make my immigration status change.
One was very conventional which would take me approximately ten years to achieve, but the other was basically a special system for those born in certain countries. I was in with over 200,000 other people. Paperwork was submitted, and all other details completed. I submitted everything and I let go. You know where I am going with this. I didn’t get my Masters degree, but within a year I did get the immigration status through the special system and beat out 200,000 people to get it.
Until this date, it continues to be the miracle in my life. And do I attest it to the very first of my many vision boards? Yes, absolutely. The first step I took for that to become a reality is believing in it. What I learnt from that experience though, is that believing that I will receive it wasn’t all that was required of me. Ask and you shall receive? Na, girl. Ask, do everything you can to make it happen, and then receive.
Why One Picture Came True and the Other Did Not
When I did the paperwork for both routes of my immigration status, I was winging the unconventional way – because it was so far fetched that I honestly did not think that would be the route that worked for me. I trusted that if I did everything in my power, that’s when the Universe/God/higher power would respond. And she did. And on the flip side of it I didn’t get my Masters degree because I did not put any effort into it. I know I wanted to get it, but I think deep inside me I knew the timing was off. I was not going to take a loan, nor was I in a place to pay for it myself. These were the two biggest blockers in my thought process and so I didn’t take that first step to achieving it.
Ever Since My First Vision Board
Over the years, I have continued to refine my vision and my board. I have started fresh, I have peeled off some pictures, and added new ones. Once I even had multiple boards but omg, so confusing and I do not recommend it. Years later, vision boards are such a normal thing to do, that even psychologists/analysts/therapists/life coaches have gotten into the game.
Your Part in the Process
What I would say to you if you want to create a vision board is to know that it’s definitely not frou-frou. But its also definitely not going to bring you your dreams if all you do is put up a picture and wait for the Universe to deliver. You need to make effort towards it. Believe the unbelievable but play your part in the game to make it happen.
If you want to attract a significant other into your life, do not put up a picture of a happy couple and then sit at home in your pj’s waiting for that prince or princess to knock on your door. Do your best to put your purty self out there. Join safe online dating sites or ask your friends to introduce you to any singles out there. Or if you’re Indian and that’s how you roll, ask your relatives arrange it for you.
In Conclusion
So hopefully you see that you can achieve dreams that you post on your vision boards. But that you also have take some action to make that happen. Oh and years later in the Summer of 2014, I put up a vision board about my Masters degree. This was where I was messing around with multiple boards, but then I randomly looked at Universities in my area and signed up for the information sessions and thought not much of it at the time, and by the Fall of 2015, I started my Masters and graduated in Spring of 2018.
