This is going to be the simplest Indian chai spice recipe you will ever need. But before that, lets clear something right off the bat. Chai means tea in Hindi. When anyone orders a “chai tea” – they’re basically saying they want a “tea tea”. Let’s get educated and educate others – including your local barista about the cultures of the world.
Inclusivity is a great thing and these tiny changes, show understanding, respect, and the acknowledgment of the existence of other languages around the world. Every culture deserves recognition and so since we have already chosen to use these words, let’s use them the right way. Okay onto the good stuff.
What is Indian Chai Spice Mix?
There are a few simple ingredients that you will need to make your own indian chai spice mix. The fun part about making it yourself is you can tweak the combination as much as you want to get the right mix for you. And what’s better is you can make jars of it to give as a gift to your family and friends. In the post here, I help you make the perfect cup of desi chai with this spice mix.
All of the ingredients listed below can be found at any desi store or regular grocer in your city. We will be making 1 full cup of this spice mix. This will probably last you about 50 cups of chai.
What is Chai Masala Made Of?
- Black Pepper Corn
- Fresh Ginger (optional)
- Rose (optional)
1. Green Cardamom pods: 2 Cups
2. Cinnamon Sticks: 2 Large Sticks
3. Black Pepper Corn: 2 tablespoons
4. Cloves: 1 tablespoon
5. Ginger (Optional)
Another addition you can make to the already ready dry spice above, is a few slices of fresh ginger. Get about 1 inch of fresh ginger and skin it. Add the chopped ginger to your boiling water so that it infuses the water to become “ginger water”. Add the other spice as you usually would. Not sure how to make indian chai? 6. Rose Petals Optional
Rose petals can be added as a visual topping to flavor your tea. According to Ayurveda, it also has some special actions on your post digestion effect – specific to reducing anger in the mind. You can find organic dried rose petals at any desi grocer.
Grind this up in a dry blender (I use the blender that has the blades closest to the bottom of the blending cup), and store in an airtight jar. This is now ready to use. So the next time you make a cup of tea, all you do is add ½ a teaspoon to the pot of boiling water (before you add the tea leaves in) and strain before drinking.
And if something feels too strong for you or you may not like black pepper at all – you can omit that. And honestly, I have 2 mixes in my pantry. I will use the first recipe above for when I’m making chai for myself. because that’s how I like it. And the other is just cardamom pods ground up because that’s how my family likes it.
